
From July 14 to 15, Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares, Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist at the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), University of Lisbon, visited Dalian Maritime University (DMU) and engaged in a series of academic exchange activities.


On the morning of July 15, President Shan Hongjun met with Academician Carlos Guedes Soares for a discussion. The two sides reached consensus on future collaboration in talent cultivation, discipline development, academic exchange, and platform establishment within the fields of maritime technology and marine engineering. Heads from the Human Resources Department, the International Cooperation and Exchange Office, and Navigation College attended the meeting.
On the morning of July 14, Academician Carlos Guedes Soares visited the smart research and training vessel Xinhongzhuan and the Remote Intelligent Control Center. During the visit, he gained detailed insights into DMU’s achievements in intelligent ship research and held in-depth discussions with the vessel’s captain as well as faculty and students on cutting-edge trends in smart navigation technologies.

On the afternoon of July 14, Academician Carlos Guedes Soares reviewed the research progress of DMU master’s and doctoral students, offering valuable guidance and suggestions. During his visit, he also delivered a university-wide academic lecture titled Prospects for Autonomous Surface Ships. In his presentation, Carlos Guedes Soares shared insights on green and low-carbon technologies for autonomous ships, regulatory frameworks for operations, and core supporting technologies. He engaged with attending faculty and students in lively discussions on applied technologies for autonomous ships, risk assessment, and other potential future research directions.
On the afternoon of July 15, Academician Carlos Guedes Soares met with heads and editors of the DMU Journals Center and accepted an invitation to serve as an international editorial board member for the Journal of Dalian Maritime University. During the meeting, he exchanged views on strategies for the journal’s international development and the launch of a new English-language publication. Subsequently, Academician Carlos Guedes Soares engaged in discussions with faculty representatives from the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering College.
