2026-04-03

On the morning of April 1, a delegation led by Jörgen Sandström, Head of the Transforming Industrial Ecosystem Program at the Centre for Energy and Materials of the World Economic Forum and Head of Industry and Technology Transformation for the Greater China Region, visited Dalian Maritime University (DMU). President Shan Hongjun met with the delegation, accompanied by officials from the Coordination Office of the Summer Davos Forum in Dalian.

Shan Hongjun extended a warm welcome to the delegation and introduced the university's history, disciplinary strengths, and international exchanges and cooperation. He emphasized that the global shipping industry is currently undergoing technological transformations, including the transition to green fuels and the development of smart ships. These changes clearly demonstrate the foresight and significance of the Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC) initiative proposed by the World Economic Forum. He noted that DMU will take this visit as an opportunity to leverage its strengths in maritime disciplines, scientific research, and talent development, strengthen exchanges with the World Economic Forum, and deepen cooperation. The two sides will work together to address the challenges posed by industry transformation, jointly explore new pathways for the green and intelligent transformation of the global shipping industry, and contribute expertise and solutions to the green transformation of the global industrial ecosystem.

Jörgen Sandström expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and introduced the role and mission of the Word Economic Forum. He elaborated on its function as a platform in promoting the green transformation of global industrial ecosystems. He stated that the global shipping and industrial sectors are undergoing profound changes, while the process of industrial decarbonization still faces many challenges. The rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies is reshaping the industry landscape. China has gained substantial experience in green and low-carbon transformation. He expressed hope that both sides will deepen cooperation and work collaboratively in areas such as green transformation, smart shipping, and talent development, in order to jointly address the challenges of industry transformation.

Officials and experts from the Office of Science and Technology, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, the Information Science and Technology College, the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and the College of Public Administration and Humanities also attended the meeting.
