On the afternoon of June 9, a delegation from the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT), led by President Kim MinJong, visited DMU. President Shan Hongjun met with the delegation for discussions and exchanges.

President Shan Hongjun extended a warm welcome to President Kim MinJong and his delegation. He gave a brief overview of the university’s scale, talent cultivation, and its achievements in international education in recent years. Shan noted that openness has long been a hallmark of the university’s development, and that DMU has maintained close ties with multiple South Korean universities through joint degree programs, faculty and student exchanges, and academic collaboration. He expressed hope that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding would further promote practical cooperation in areas such as personnel exchanges and seafarer training, and contribute to the development of the shipping industry in both China and South Korea, as well as the broader region.

President Kim MinJong expressed his appreciation for the university’s warm reception and provided an overview of KIMFT’s educational programs, training facilities, and instructional systems. He noted that Dalian Maritime University is a key partner for KIMFT in China and expressed his hope that the visit would strengthen mutual understanding and pave the way for substantive cooperation in areas such as faculty and student exchanges and joint training programs, at the earliest opportunity.

During the meeting, both sides also exchanged views on topics including seafarer training, the operation and management of training vessels, and the development of maritime education in the context of intelligent technologies.

Following the meeting, representatives from both institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The meeting was also attended by officials from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and the School of Continuing Education.
During their stay, Kim MinJong and his delegation toured some teaching and research facilities, including the Exhibition Hall, the library, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Integrated Transportation, and the Underwater Robotics Laboratory.

The Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT) is a government-affiliated institution in South Korea dedicated to maritime education and research. Located in Busan, it was established in 1998 through the merger of the Korea Fishing Training Center and the Korea Maritime Training and Research Institute, with its origin dating back to 1965. As the only national institution in South Korea exclusively responsible for the education and training of seafarers and professionals in the maritime and fisheries sectors, KIMFT offers comprehensive training programs for maritime and fisheries personnel, including senior deck and engineering officers, and administers national qualification examinations such as those for seafarer certification.
