International Forum on the Education and Development of Women in Maritime held by Dalian Maritime University

In response to the first International Maritime Women’s Day and to celebrate the upcoming 18th Maritime Day of China, Dalian Maritime University (DMU) held an online International Forum on the Education and Development of Women in Maritime on June 8, 2022, the 113th anniversary of DMU.

More than 150 representatives from international organization, governments, shipping industry, maritime institutions from China, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Russia, Australia, South Korea and other countries attended the Forum. Prof. Sun Yuqing, President of DMU, and Ms. Li Guanyu, Deputy Director-General, Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a welcome address. The Forum was chaired by Prof. Ma Mingfei, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of DMU.

In the address, Prof. Sun Yuqing said that by holding this Forum DMU hopes to continue the celebration and commemoration of the first International Maritime Women’s Day  and to include the issue of maritime women’s education and development into DMU’s development plan. He also shared the school’s experience of training women in maritime, and called on all parties to strengthen exchanges and cooperation so as to create a new chapter in the development of women in maritime.

In the address, Ms. Li Guanyu said that women play a vital and irreplaceable role in the world’s maritime fields such as shipping, ports and shore-based services. She believes that in the face of the serious gender imbalance in the maritime sector, it is necessary to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning at the international level, absorb advanced experience and practice, and jointly promote the global “realization of gender equality and the empowerment of women”.

Themed on “Empowering Women for Maritime Prosperity”, the Forum invited Mrs. Azara Prempeh, Chief of Staff, Office of the Secretary-General of IMO, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, Ms. Zeng Hui, Level II Counsel of Maritime Safety Administration of the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Zheng Lei, Senior Partner of Co-Effort Law Firm, Dr. Zhang Jinlei, Dean of International Collaboration College of DMU, Ms. Chen Wei, Deputy Director of Shanghai Pudong Maritime Safety Administration, Ms. Yu Jiajia, teacher from Navigation College of DMU, Ms. Yu Jiangmeng, Representative of Seafarer’s Wife, to deliver keynote speeches. They shared their ideas about how to empower women in maritime and promote the development of the maritime industry.

With the participation of domestic and foreign experts and scholars in maritime, the Forum provided a platform for the maritime community to discuss the gender imbalance challenges and solutions, and share the experience and insight of women in maritime in education and training.
