In order to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between DMU and UPACIFICO, strengthen DMU academic campus in Ecuador, and celebrate the 2022 World Maritime Day, DMU and UPACIFICO jointly organized the Carbon Neutralization and Green Shipping Forum from September 26 to 29, 2022. The opening ceremony was chaired by Mingfei MA, Deputy-Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office of DMU.
The forum was held online. Experts and scholars from the two universities shared their views on how to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality and promote high-quality and sustainable development of the shipping industry. The academic speech session was chaired by Liying HAO, professor in the Marine Electrical Engineering College and assistant director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office of DMU.
Minyi Xu, professor in the Marine Engineering College of DMU, gave a speech titled “Marine Triboelectric Nanogenerator and Self-powered Systems”. The speech introduced that marine triboelectric nanogenerators can be used as self-powered sensors for sensing environmental information. On this basis, marine triboelectric nanogenerators can provide in-situ power solutions for marine Internet of Things and small marine equipment.
Julian Reyna, dean of the Faculty of the Sea and the Environment of UPACIFICO, gave a speech titled “Improving Carbon Neutralization and Green Shipping in Ecuador and some other countries in LA”. The speech introduced that marine shipping liberates some other greenhouse effect gases that create a pollution cover at the atmosphere, increasing the climate change consequence. By analyzing the occurrence of this phenomenon in Ecuador and some other countries of Latin America, it can be found that utilizing the artificial intelligence could minimize the risk of pollution.
Yuzhe ZHAO, professor in the School of Maritime Economics and Management of DMU, gave a speech titled “Technology Transition and Operation Management for Low-carbon Shipping”. From the perspective of the technological evolution of green ships and the management measures of ship operation, the speech discussed the research and development progress and application prospect of promoting ship emission reduction technology and ship prevention pollution technology at the industry level and summarizes the operation strategies and management measures to accelerate ship energy saving and emission reduction at the enterprise level.
Sandra Asanza, National Port Director of Ecuador’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, gave a speech titled “The Ecuadorian Road to Carbon Neutralization and Green Shipping”. The speech analyzed the Ecuadorian Port System, in particular its operation and actors, and the actions they carry out in support of the SDGs, in particular, number 13, “Climate Action” and number 14 “Life Submarine”.
The success of this forum is a new chapter after the signing of academic campus agreement and the establishment of strategic partnership between DMU and UPACIFICO. It will have a far-reaching impact on the two universities to move to a new stage and achieve new progress. At the same time, this academic exchange will also enhance consensus and contribute wisdom and strength to the sustainable development of green shipping.
